Board Members


Lance Bauer (Chairman)

Lance was appointed Secretary of the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust in March 2003 following his retirement from Westpac Banking Corporation. His banking career with the Bank of New South Wales and Westpac spanned 40 years and he held many senior management and executive positions.

Lance was a Trustee of the Buckland Fund, and was involved with its transformation and rebirth as the Westpac Foundation. He continued to be a Trustee of the Foundation until his retirement from the Bank in 2001.

Lance joined the Board in January, 2007 and was elected Chairman in 2015.


John Murphy (Director)

John joined the Board of Trustees in 2018. John’s involvement in the financial advice industry spans 26 years. In 1998 John founded the Investec Wentworth Private Equity Fund and its predecessor funds.  John was the managing director of those funds from incorporation until 2012.  In 2015 John established and is the Managing Director of Adexum Capital Limited.  

John has served on numerous Boards and Committees across a spectrum of industries.


Robert Minter (Director)

Robert is a solicitor. Prior to setting up his own practice he was a partner of Minter Ellison, Solicitors, a position he held for 30 years.


As a Trustee since 2000, he continues the Minter family’s dedicated involvement with the Walter and Eliza Hall Charities. His father, also Robert, was a Trustee.


He is CEO, First Asia Project Consulting, is a former President of Australia China Business Council and is a Member of the Australia China Council of the Dept of Foreign Affairs and Trade.


Robert lectures on topics relating to doing business in China, at various Universities.


Jon Isaacs (Director)

Jon has over 25 years experience as a Senior Executive, of which nine were as CEO of the Royal Blind Society of NSW. He has over twenty years experience on public, private and not-for-profit boards.

Jon joined the Board in 2014.


Anne Schumacher (Director)

Anne has over 40 years experience in the business sector including 23 years in banking.  Her range of senior and executive roles whilst at Westpac included Director, Westpac Staff Superannuation Plan (1996-1999) and Trustee of the Buckland Fund/Westpac Foundation (1994-1999).     

Anne joined the Board in 2016.


Helen Cook (Company Secretary)

Helen joined the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust in July 2003 following a career of 17 years with AMP. Helen managed the AMP Foundation’s grants program for five years, and has considerable experience in the areas of administration, events management and communication. She is passionate about assisting those who are disadvantaged in our community.

Helen accepted the position of Trust Secretary in 2007 and is responsible for development, implementation, enhancement and monitoring of the organisation's various programs.  Helen is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Trust.
